Jesuits in Indonesia
The work of the Jesuits in Indonesia beginning with the work of St. Francis Xavier and a few other priests in the Moluccas since the mid-16th century. But because of disagreement over Portugal and Spain, drawn by the Jesuits in the mid-17th century.
In 1859 Van den Elzen, SJ and J. Palinckx, SJ, arrived in Indonesia, and start again the work of the Jesuits in Indonesia. In the year 1893 W.J. Staal, SJ, was assigned as the Vicar Apostolic Church located in Batavia.
On December 14, 1904, Van Lith, SJ baptizing 171 people in Sendangsono, Muntilan, Central Java, after 4 people from the village Kalibawang baptized on May 20, 1904. Van Lith also build secondary schools in Muntilan seminary. This seminary eventually produce the first Jesuit priest ordained from Indonesia between 1926-1928 is FX Satiman, SJ, A. Djajasepoetra, SJ, and Albertus Soegijapranata, SJ. With Pope Pius XII's decision on August 1, 1940 the Apostolic Vicariate of Semarang was established, with the first bishop Albertus Soegijapranata, SJ, as Indonesia's first indigenous bishop. A diocesan priest, Justinus Darmojuwono, Pr. later succeeded him as Archbishop of Semarang since 1964 and then appointed the first cardinal from Indonesia on June 26, 1967. Justinus Darmojuwono later replaced by Julius Darmaatmadja, SJ as Archbishop of Semarang, and later became archbishop of Jakarta, and was appointed as the second cardinal of Indonesia.

Jesuits were also active in the work of social communication, education, pastoral ministry, and social. Jesuits in the communications field working with Life magazine publishing, magazine base, publishing Cipta Loka Caraka and Canisius, studios and audiovisual Prativi Studios Puskat. In the social field of the Jesuits seek justice through the works that have been made among others by nurturing the volunteers at the Jakarta Social Institute and the Jesuit Refugee Service Indonesia.
In the field of active Jesuit education through public schools like Canisius College and the College Gonzaga Jakarta, Semarang Loyola College, College de Britto Yogyakarta and College Le Cocq d'Armandville Nabire-Papua, as well as special education and agricultural techniques such as the Vocational College Mikael Solo, ATMI st. Michael (College of Mechanical Engineering Industry) in Solo, SMTIK-Pika (Wood Middle School Technology Education Upper-Upper Wood Industry) in Semarang, SPMA in Ambarawa, KPTT (Agriculture Course Park Farm) in Salatiga, AAK (Action Agriculture Canisius) in Semarang .
In the field of higher education, the Jesuits run Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta and its members teach at various universities in Indonesia. In pastoral ministry, the Jesuit religious teaching, leading retreats, giving spiritual guidance, establish research and development center in the field of pastoral. In the social field, a number of Jesuits active in the social field and social culture. Petrus Josephus Zoetmulder have profound knowledge about the literature of Java and successfully develop a two-volume dictionary Javanese version.
Jesuit educational works for its members at the novitiate, philosophy, in the apostolic orientation, theology and tertianship. In Indonesia, novitiate level education in the College Stanislaus, Girisonta. Philosophy at the College of Education Hermanum, with a study on the STF Driyarkara, Jakarta.
